New Job Tips

I forgot how overwhelming starting a new job can be. Learning who your new coworkers are, what your new role truly is, getting a new laptop setup, and trying to fit in can be a LOT to take in within a very short period of time. I have been at my new job for 45 days now. I finally feel like I have a firm grasp of the environment I am now employed in. It is different than where I was before in both team size & engagement. Communication is quite active where I'm at now versus before more subdued. I'm currently working on a project implementation team of close to 100 people versus my prior job of working with a few individuals to support a system.

I am grateful to have moved employment, especially in the current job market. I hear horror stories daily about the job search & am extremely thankful to be newly employed. In every job I have left, I have felt a sense of peace with leaving an employer eventually, some earlier or later than others, but there always comes a time when acceptance & peace with the decision comes. After 45 days, I can confidently say I have hit the full peaceful stage.

To aid in this career transition, here are some tips I have learned from my recent experience:

  1. Be patient with yourself. You will not know everything on day 1. You will not know everything on day 30+ either. It will take some time to understand the new environment.
  2. The technology will be the easiest part of your job. Don't worry about knowing everything about the system, but focus on the people aspect. The people are the most difficult, complex part to master & comprehend.
  3. Be open to learning things outside of the normal admin job description. The Salesforce Admin role is very vast. You can gather requirements one day and then set up a new feature the next day. Don't get mixed up with where a task goes, but try to positively help where you can.
  4. Handle any disappointment quietly. Privately journal any disappointments so they don't accidentally slip out in conversations. Keep the negative to yourself & stay as positive as possible. Stay away from any project shenanigans, but keep to task away from the drama.
Successfully starting a new job is a process that only gets better with practice. It is never easy leaving a job for a new one. I learn something new every time I make the decision to start over & hopefully get wiser with each life experience.
