Deep Thoughts on ChatGPT
There has been lots of talk & excitement around ChatGPT in the past few months. Some individuals are very much for it & others want to ban its use everywhere. ChatGPT reminds me of searching on Google. It's essentially Google 2.0. When Google first came out in 1998, it had extreme feelings towards it as well. Google search functionality has changed the world as I imagine ChatGPT will as well. I can't imagine not being able to search on Google in my day-to-day life. It has became that ingrained & can forsee ChatGPT doing the same with some aspects.
ChatGPT is still in the beta stage & has a ways to go before it is trustworthy. It is a very promising technology though. I find it helpful to use when stuck writing (no, this wasn't created with ChatGPT!) & for obtaining ideas on how to better word things. When I've used it, I have never directly copied & pasted what it wrote as my own but have refined it. I've taken a few key sentences & made them my own. It has jump-started the writing thought process more than replaced it.
ChatGPT is far from replacing workers jobs. Some manual jobs could be replaced with ChatGPT, but I don't see it replacing all technology jobs anytime soon. The right things need asked of ChatGPT for it to respond with a correct answer. If one doesn't know what to ask ChatGPT, they won't get the results requested. ChatGPT is a bot, so the way questions are formed is important to get correct answers. I consider ChatGPT more of a tool to help do my job versus a replacement for that job.
I do feel that ChatGPT in the wrong hands could do harm. I also feel the answers to questions could potentially provide wrong answers if the algorithm isn't carefully monitored. The government shouldn't be responsible or create regulations for its use though. There should be guidelines to make sure it is providing truthful answers & for its appropriate use, but that should be more of an ethical standards committee versus members of Congress.
ChatGPT is an exciting technology development. It will be interesting to see how it will be used in the future. I am open to the new technology & look forward to seeing its growth.
